Fungi and Fire

Like animals and plants, fungi are affected by fire. The extent to which they are affected depends on the frequency, intensity and extent of fire. Little is known about the life histories of particular fungus species and how they respond to fire, but some have clever adaptations to cope with the vagaries and uncertainties of Australian conditions.

Some fungi such as cup and disc fungi commonly appear after fire and are likely to play a vital role in the post-fire habitat restoration. However, other fungi are highly sensitive and could be adversely affected by inappropriate fire regimes.

In this workshop we will explore various questions around fungi and fire along with the basics of fungus identification, fungal ecology, and the natural and cultural history of fungi. Fungus specimens from the local area will be displayed, discussed and examined during the workshop.

We will then partake in an exciting foray through various local ecosystems including some that are fire affected, to search for species of interest. Supplementary notes are also provided. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own specimens for identification at the workshop.

Wear clothes suitable for a field trip including covered-in shoes. Bring your own lunch, morning tea provided.
