Funk Engine
Event description
Funk Engine is more than a band — it’s a machine built for groove. At its core, the group locks in with the precision of an engine: each player a moving part that powers the whole, generating unstoppable momentum.
Led by bassist and groove-architect Siebe Pogson, the Sydney quintet features saxophonist Nishcal Manjunath, pianist Nicholas Twiney, guitarist Timo Jokela and drummer Deva Permana.
"It’s hard not to like this very hip album… not only danceable but highly listenable as well." ★★★★- The Australian.
Funk Engine’s sound channels the raw energy of the 70s funk of Herbie Hancock, while weaving in the colours of modern soul and hip-hop reminiscent of bands such as Butcher Brown, Snarky Puppy and Lettuce. They make ‘jazz-funk sound fresh and contemporary.’
Loudmouth hails their music as “positive and uplifting.”
The release of their 3rd recording Jazz-Funk (Move records 2020), has resonated internationally receiving positive reviews from The Australian, Loudmouth, Classikon and Funkblog (Netherlands).
Stuart Vandergraff of Loudmouth observed “Upon listening to Funk Engine, there is a strong sense of the joy of jumping around in the bedroom as a teenager discovering funk. However, the depth of research and affinity these players have for the genre is clearly evident.” DJ Ritz of Funkblog adds, “the music is excellent and catchy with a timeless, laidback groove.”
