Furniture Up‑Cycling & Finishings.

Creative planning, Prepping, Painting & Finishing Techniques

Workshop Overview

This hands‑on, knowledge‑based workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of furniture up‑cycling with a strong focus on painting and finishing techniques that can be applied to a wide range of furniture styles and projects. An experienced facilitator will guide participants through different techniques using demonstrations and supported hands‑on practice. The workshop is designed to build skills, confidence, and understanding rather than complete a full furniture transformation during the session. Participants are encouraged to bring a small, manageable piece of furniture. While projects will be started during the workshop, most pieces will be completed at home using the techniques learned.

Learning Approach

The workshop combines facilitator‑led demonstrations with practical application. Participants receive knowledge‑based instruction, opportunities for hands‑on experimentation, and individual guidance and troubleshooting. Techniques taught are transferable and designed to support future projects beyond the workshop.

Introduction to Furniture Up‑Cycling

Participants are introduced to what furniture up‑cycling involves and how it differs from restoration. The session covers the benefits of creative reuse and sustainability, an overview of common furniture styles and finishes, and a clear explanation of the up‑cycling process from start to finish. Tools, materials, and safety considerations are also discussed.

Furniture Assessment and Project Planning

Participants learn how to choose suitable furniture for painting and finishing, identify common materials such as solid timber, veneer, laminate, and mixed surfaces, and assess overall condition and structural stability. Guidance is provided on planning a realistic project, understanding time and skill limitations, and identifying which parts of the process can be completed during the workshop versus at home.

Preparation for Painting

This section covers preparing furniture for painting, including removing surface build‑up and residues, knowing when light sanding is required, and avoiding unnecessary over‑preparation. Participants learn when primers, sealers, or blockers may be needed and how proper preparation supports a durable, long‑lasting finish.

Painting Techniques

Participants are introduced to paint types suitable for furniture up‑cycling and how different products affect finish and durability. Instruction includes colour selection and testing, brush techniques for smooth or textured finishes, managing coverage and drying times, layering paint for depth, and avoiding common beginner mistakes.

Decorative and Finishing Techniques

A range of decorative and finishing techniques is explored, allowing participants to adapt methods to suit their own style preferences. Techniques may include layered colour effects, subtle distressing, soft aged finishes, and cleaner modern painted looks. Emphasis is placed on choosing finishes that suit the furniture piece rather than following a single style.

Finishing and Protection

Participants learn about waxes, sealers, and topcoats, including when and why sealing is required. The session covers balancing appearance with functionality, protecting furniture for everyday use, and preparing pieces for safe transport and further work at home.

Troubleshooting and Problem Solving

Common issues such as uneven finishes, visible brush marks, patchy coverage, or over‑distressing are discussed. Participants are shown how to adjust techniques, correct mistakes, and confidently problem‑solve during current and future projects.

Completing Your Project at Home

The workshop concludes with guidance on next steps, including drying and curing considerations, setting up a simple home workspace, planning remaining project stages, caring for painted furniture, and applying learned techniques to other furniture pieces.

What to Expect

Participants will begin their furniture project during the workshop and gain the knowledge and skills needed to confidently continue and complete it at home. The focus is on building practical skills rather than rushing to finish a piece on the day.

What to Bring

Participants should bring one small, portable piece of furniture and wear clothing suitable for painting. All tools, paints, and materials are provided unless otherwise stated.Locations
