Event description

THREE JOYFUL HOUSES by IAN ATHFIELD

SUNDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER @ FUTUNA CHAPEL - KARORI

Three joyful houses, three families and three client stories about the commissioning, designing, building and living in homes designed by Ian Athfield.

SPENCER and DIANE LOGAN

1974 - 1978

WINDY POINT – EASTBOURNE

Photographer unknown

Spencer Logan and his wife Diane will talk about the commissioning of their first new home, its design, construction, the cleaning of thousands of bricks, and living in this unique collection of a pair of recycled brick towers with timber clad ‘saddlebags’.

ROSS, CUSHLA and TESS JAMIESON

1974 - 1978

MAHINA BAY

Ross and Cushla have lived in their home on the Eastern hills above Mahina Bay for 48 years. They will, along with their youngest daughter, recount their experiences of working with Ian Athfield in the commissioning of the design of their home, the construction process and then living in this hillside hugging collection of building, and how this home may have influenced their living and the raising of a family of four children.

JONATHAN CUSTANCE   - THE CUSTANCE HOUSE 1981 – 1982

HAVELOCK NORTH

“The Custance House replaced an early modern home that burnt to the ground in 1981 leaving only the swimming pool unscathed.  Ray and Ann Custance, who were friends of the Athfields, sought a bold replacement.  With their son, industrial and interior designer Jonathan Custance, they prepared a four page brief for a new building….. “
