Future Architecture of the Network Workshop
Description
The Future Architecture of Network (FAN) Programme is a government-funded initiative investigating how hybrid AC/DC architectures can support the future evolution of the electrical power system. The programme is structured around five workstreams, with Workstream 1 focused on assessing the future AC/DC network architecture.
As part of this work, an advanced simulation toolkit is being developed to assess the planning, operation, and performance of future hybrid AC/DC networks.
During this seminar, we will present the latest developments in our dynamic analysis tool, designed for electromagnetic transient (EMT) and time-domain studies of large-scale power systems.
The session will cover:
Modelling of power system components and power electronic converters
Computationally tractable EMT and dynamic simulation capabilities for grid-scale hybrid AC/DC networks
Case studies demonstrating interaction of converters interfaced generation with conventional power system components
Assessment of system stability under faults, generation loss, renewable plant trips, and other large disturbances
Applications for future grid planning and operational studies
We will also present a New Zealand multi-terminal HVDC case study, exploring the technical challenges and opportunities associated with integrating a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) as a third terminal with the existing HVDC link.
This interactive workshop will combine technical presentations and discussion, providing an opportunity to share insights and help shape future research priorities.
We warmly invite industry professionals, researchers, and stakeholders to join us for this event. We encourage in-person attendance at the University of Canterbury, where refreshments will be provided and participants can take part in more interactive discussions. For those unable to attend in person, the seminar will also be available online.
