The Port Environment Centre, Youth Environment Council, Adapt West, Green Adelaide Education, CAWRA and Conservation Council SA will be attending to showcase opportunities to volunteer or join local groups. Local youth advocate Denzel James will be the guest MC.

Young people and their families are invited to come together on World Earth Day to watch Future Council, a film by Damon Gameau and Regen Studios.

About the film

Millions of children around the world are frustrated by the dire lack of action to protect the planet and their future. Until now, their only avenue to express these concerns has been protesting on the streets. Director Damon Gameau (2040, That Sugar Film) invites eight children on an epic adventure across Europe in a school bus powered by biofuel. Their mission is to better understand the planet’s predicament, explore solutions and, most importantly, take the conversation from the streets, into the boardrooms of some of the world’s largest polluters and most influential companies.

This inspiring and rollicking journey, where School of Rock meets An Inconvenient Truth, results in the children forming a ‘Future Council’ to advise and influence the world’s most powerful companies on their decisions that impact nature.

FAQs

  • What is Future Council?

Future Council is a child-led movement that empowers young people to take action for environmental sustainability, inspired by a documentary film directed of the same name which will be screened at this event.

"We are a globally connected community of young people aged 9-16. We are a child-led organisation. We are here to design our future and we're doing it with creativity, courage, and lots of fun. We're clear about who we are and what we stand for.

Our power is in our refreshing ideas, integrity, morality and unity. We are researchers, designers and advisers. We work with business and industry to co-design real, sustainable products, solutions and initiatives.

Businesses must be ready to sit with us, learn from us and take meaningful action. Our trust must be earned, not bought. The funds we generate go straight to repairing nature."

  • When do doors open for the event?

Doors open at 1:30 pm for this event, which is being held in the venue's larger function area.

If you arrive earlier, you are welcome to explore the outdoor spaces and/or gallery spaces at Yipti Yartapuultiku cultural centre.

  • What is happening besides the screening?

Alongside the screening, we’re excited to host an Environment Expo packed with inspiring organisations making a real difference.

The City of PAE has invited representatives from several leading environmental groups to share information, answer your burning questions, and highlight ways you can get involved. These opportunities link directly to the pledge we’ll be asked to consider during the screening—because creating a better tomorrow starts with the actions we take today.

Before and after Future Council screening, you’ll be able to chat with these organisations, explore their projects, and discover hands-on ways to participate, advocate, and shape a more sustainable future.

    Come curious. Leave inspired.

  • Which organisations will be involved in the expo?
  • Who is the MC for the event?

Local young person Denzel James will be your MC for this event.

Denzel is a passionate leader and advocate, both within his South Australian community and the wider Australian community. As a prominent representative of South Australia, he serves as a role model for his peers, as he embodies the values of leadership, integrity and social responsibility for all Australians.

He currently serves as the Youth Chairman for South Australia and as the Climate Spokesperson, where he represents youth voices on national platforms. Denzel has worked across multiple fields, attending United National General Assembly meetings and inputting his views and perspectives for young Australians.

His dedication to community service earned him recognition as the 2024 City of Adelaide Young Citizen of the Year and Port Adelaide Enfield Young Citizen of the Year. He was also nominated for the prestigious Young Australian of the Year award for South Australia.

Denzel hopes to raise the number of opportunities available to young people through local, state and federal bodies in government, so that they can have a seat at the table with decisions and feel included.
