Event description
What happens when we unite?
Join us during Vivid Sydney to uncover and unpack how creativity, research and education can interconnect with industry for public good. This series of events, activations, dinners and exhibitions is for Sydneysiders to understand how the work of universities can impact their everyday lives.
Dominating our UTS Central space, overlooking busy Broadway, we encourage people to join us as we look at the future of food, fashion, and discover more about data visualisation, stories and immersive experiences.
UTS + Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Fashions and Textiles | Future Fashion
The future of fashion is now. Join an intimate conversation with Yousef Akbar and Nina Gbor about how they work towards zero-waste fashion using the latest digital technologies and sustainable materials. Brought to you by the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Fashion + Textiles.
Fascinated by the interaction of the cloth and body, Yousef Akbar is about challenging convention in cutting and construction of garments while maintaining elegance and femininity. It is the voice he uses to deliver his message and express in the form of fabric worn on the body.
Using recycled and upcycled materials and by supporting local artisans in small communities in the Middle East and around the world, the Yousef Akbar brand is built on spirit of collaboration creating ethical and responsible couture and ready to wear, garments that not only make the wearer look good, but also feel good about wearing.
Akbar creates a narrative with his collections to evoke emotional undercurrents of everyday life. When you wear one of his garments, you not only will be living his story, but you will be experiencing he’s personal research and quest for inspiration.
As the founder of Eco Styles, Nina Gbor is an award-winning sustainability advocate, ethical fashion speaker, climate activist, writer and educator. From lived experience and education, Nina writes and speaks about the dynamics between the global South and global North, with focus on inequalities and justice in areas of fashion relating to socio-economics, politics and gender.
Nina has a master’s degree in International Development and is a former sustainable fashion tutor in short courses at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. She coined the phrase ‘get off the fashion trendmill’ which means individuality and self-knowledge should be the premise for consuming clothing, not fashion trends. She is based in Sydney, Australia.
