Event description

A SMALL GROUP, INTERACTIVE, HALF DAY SESSION

This hands-on workshop will allow attendees to increase their knowledge on:

  • carbon footprint minimisation strategies; and
  • skills related to adapting buildings and landscapes to changes in rainfall patterns, water scarcity, natural disasters and heat.

There will be Q&A, networking and mentoring opportunities available.

A light lunch will be provided.

Line up:

Rob Snow, Architect, holds an international post graduate masters degree in Environmental Design.  Rob will introduce concepts of sustainable home design such as passive design and thermal comfort.  https://snowarchitects.com.au/

Rose and Scott Wilson, enthusiastic humans who built a load bearing, off grid, and rather beautiful cob building. Cob is a material made of clay, sand and straw and then, so the formal term goes, smooshed together. The materials are largely local, low impact and with a very high thermal mass. They will share stories of why they chose this method, and how it went and what it is like to work with and now spend time in, as well as bringing buckets of material for us all to stomp in and create our own little pile of cob. You can see some rather epic drone footage videos of the build on Youtube @seedpodpermaculture

Ali Bigg, Retrosuburbia and permaculture advocate, will share her journey, learnings and tips from her experience retrofitting her home and garden to become more sustainable and self resilient.

James Langley, of Diamond Head Mud Bricks, has built three load bearing mudbrick homes on the site of the workshop, after learning of the technique in South America over 30 years ago.  James will also host the day, and provide participants with the opportunity to create mud bricks and view the process involved.  www.diamondheadmudbicks.wordpress.com
