Event description

What happens when you put a pile of plastic toys, plastic recycling machines, the imagination of young people and the wisdom of old people together in a room?

….we need you to show us!

Over two days of workshops in Battery Point Community Hall this summer school holidays, a mixture of old people and young from the community will turn their old toys and plastic objects into new inventions using emerging recycling technologies. The inventions will come from conversations between participants old and young, where the wisdom of age and the dreams of the young combine into unique responses to matters participants care about.

Kids aged 7-12 years old will learn about materials and manufacturing processes as they disassemble toys, use salvaged plastics and emerging sustainable technologies to design and create. Participants will benefit from intergenerational sharing and learning as they approach a big challenge (recycling plastic) in a fun and supported environment.

Workshops will be facilitated by Future of Toys artists Benjamin Paul, Caitlin Fargher and Sarah Hall who will provide all of the materials, skills and knowledge needed along the way. The artists have been working closely with City of Hobart to facilitate the call out for elders to participate in the workshops, elders who are attending are City of Hobart program regulars.

Workshop outcomes and inventions will be shared with the public through an exhibition at Good Grief Studios, with the Grande Opening event on the 16 February 2024 4.30pm - 8pm.

Don't miss the chance to be part of this unique intergenerational workshop in Hobart.

Note:

  • Participants are encouraged to bring a toy they are ready to pull apart and recycle into a new invention
  • Participants are required to attend both consecutive workshop days, 5 & 6 February 9am - 4pm
  • Kids aged 7 - 12 will need to be good independent workers, ready for 2 full days of making, thinking and sharing. If you have any questions about the workshop and if it is the right fit for your child, please give us a call or send us an email.
  • Some snacks, juice and a light lunch will be provided across both days, but participants are welcome to bring their own.
  • Please bring a sun hat and drink bottle for outdoor play in the recess, lunch and afternoon break.
  • This workshop will be documented by film and photographs for use in the exhibition and promotion. When purchasing tickets, you can either consent or opt-out of this process for your child.
