Overview

Logistics and supply chain management is one of the most rapidly growing and changing disciplines of business and science.

In recent history (i.e., last 50+ years) there has never been such unprecedented requirements for skilled people and understanding of supply chain management than in these times of pandemic uncertainty. Prior to 2020 we would have focused on creating leanness, getting rid of inventory out of the supply chain, price procurement through off-shoring to distant low wage economies, putting in place appropriate quality management systems to deal with off-shore supply, and outsourcing of logistics to 3PL’s.

Businesses of today however largely because of Covid want to:

know how their supply chains should deal with events (an example of an event would be Brexit)
know their supply chains are engineered to meet trends (e.g., sustainability, globalisation, digitisation, fair trade etc.)
know how they de-risk their companies supply chains
be able to evaluate getting a better balance between on-shoring and off-shoring
understand what inventory to invest in and where to position it
find ways to control increasing freight costs while managing a changing demand dynamic and changing routes to market such as an increase in B2C (i.e., with Governments throwing money at people who can’t spend it on the likes of travel we see an increase spend on ‘stuff’ and a significant jump in online spend resulting in a completely different logistics dynamic, the level such of which has never been seen before)
understand how to genuinely collaborate (rather than just go through the motions) with suppliers and customers as a means of creating shared value to build a more sustainable competitive supply chain (am currently working with a multinational on this exact requirement as they see it as critical to their ongoing supply chain effectiveness and success)
understand how to get their supply chains being more agile and responsive
have sustainable carbon neutral supply chain solutions
understand how businesses can stay competitive and benefit from emerging technologies such as:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- 3D printing (or additive manufacturing)
- Block-chain
- robotics
- autonomous land, sea and aerial vehicles
- wider use of RFID
- big data
- Industrié 4.0 (optimizes the computerization of Industry 3.0. Through a combination of cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things & the Internet of Systems, make Industry 4.0 possible & the smart factory a reality)
- The Internet of Things (refers to the ever-growing network of physical objects that feature an IP address for internet connectivity, & the communication that occurs between these objects & systems)
- automation‑enhanced ‘last mile’ same‑day delivery: think drones

In the retail logistics and supply chain space, our future technologies will include:

use of beacons to enhance in-store experiences to bridge physical and on-line experiences
facial recognition with emotion interpretation
robot assistants (for customer interaction but also supply chain operations such as checking stock, find pricing errors and misplaced items, full stock audits)
smart mirrors/displays (utilising AI, virtual reality, and gesture recognition technology to create virtual changing rooms)
auto payments (we have seen self-checkout, contactless payment – the future is you walk out of the store with goods, and these being detected as you leave and automatically charged to your account

The challenge in all this is obvious. To some extent many of underlying solutions lie in technology and systems that could be bought off the shelf. But everything else calls for skills, and judgement. And even technology and systems require the skills to be able to identify the right technologies and systems to buy, the skills to be able to implement them within the business, utilise them to the full, and utilise them to deliver the expected outcomes. Moving forward it will be vital that those involved in company supply chains learn to ask the right questions, to develop clarity and understanding of what the desired outcome is.

Learning Outcomes

As facilitators, our role is to encourage participants to engage with knowledge at a deeper and more interactive level, working with what they are learning in the real-world sense, rather than just passively taking information on board. Consequently, the program learning outcomes are designed to enable participants to:

Formulate strategies to ‘de-risk’ your company's supply chain.
Create plans to effectively manage logistics within a pandemic world.
Develop appropriate ‘route-to-market’ logistics that delivers value to the organization and its customers.
Appraise hardware solutions that create efficiency within the supply chain.
Evaluate emerging supply chain technology solutions, determining at what stage in the company’s development these would add value.

Facilitator

Alan Win, Professor of Practice, is a respected management consultant and educator in logistics, supply chain and value chain management with over 45 years’ experience working with some 150+ private, public, governmental, and not-for profit organisations across 12 countries and most industry verticals. He also a director and sits on the Board of 10 companies in New Zealand and Australia.

In addition to providing strategic advice to established corporate clients (national and multinational), Alan has been instrumental in the framing of logistics and supply chain strategies for more than a dozen new company start-ups, including major brands such as Yoplait, Pepsi-cola, Maxxium (a global joint venture between Jim Beam, Remy Martin, Highland Distillers & Vin & Sprit).

For the past 22 years in addition to project-based consulting and education, Alan’s company has also provided Fourth Party Logistics (4PL), through embedding team within client organisations on a long-term basis to deliver value through proactively managing that organisations supply chain on a day-to-day basis.

Alan is a Certified Management Consultant (approximately only 2% of consultants worldwide are certified), is a Past President and Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants. He also holds a number of other logistics and supply chain qualifications including ML&SCM, MCIPS, MCILT, and CPIM.

This Workshop is $2400pp including GST and Humanitix booking fees.
