Event description

WRIQ has coordinated an industry tour of key infrastructure assets in South East Queensland. Participants will be taken on tours of landfills, organic recycling facilities and container exchange points to see what happens with stuff that we no longer want and how our waste can be turned back into valuable resources.

Please note: Participants should bring their own high-Vis Vest, in Ear Protection and Safety Glasses

Lunch and snacks will be provided.  There will also be quizzes and prizes on the bus.

TOMRA Varsity Lakes Depot
The TOMRA Varsity Lakes site is an approved Container Refund Point under the QLD Container Refund Scheme known as Containers for Change. The site is operated by the world’s leader in reverse vending technology, TOMRA.
Delegates will see state of the art automation in collecting containers and assessing their eligibility and how this translates to automated sorting in the back of house.

Stapylton Resource Recovery
This recently converted quarry provides a convenient disposal location within easy reach of southern Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
The site consists of a 10 million cubic metre landfill for general waste as well as limited regulated waste and a transfer station incorporating recycling with a new 200,000tpa plant due for completion in Oct 2021.
Onsite activities include timber, soils and concrete processing.

Phoenix Power Recyclers
Phoenix is Queensland’s first purpose built environmentally controlled composting facility.
The facility features aerated floor composting tunnels in a negative pressure environment where odour emissions are minimised and the conditions for composting are optimised. This makes it ideally suited to accept FOGO and food wastes of all kinds.
Phoenix is also working to develop markets in the agricultural community, through market education strategy forming partnerships with waste producers from the food production and biosolids industries to develop products that are in increasing demand for the health of agricultural soils.
