Event description

gabby fluke-mogul & Lily Finnegan duo:

gabby fluke-mogul: violin and vocals Lily Finnegan: drums

In their debut album, gabby fluke-mogul and Lily Finnegan give their respects to the queer punk rock & avant jazz musicians of the expansive continuum past, present, future. A prayer, a scream, a steadfast commitment - Finnegan and fluke-mogul weave improvised song, solo, and laughter in this music, recorded in the depths of July 2023 in Chicago. Lily Glick Finnegan is a Chicago born and based drummer, composer, improviser and organizer. She currently plays in her own self led quartet along with Ken Vandermark’s Edition Redux and punk band Cucuy. Lily collaborates with a wide range of artists including Nicole Mitchell, Fay Victor, James Brandon Lewis, gabby fluke-mogul, Shanta Narullah, Ed Wilkerson Jr., Devon Gates, Dave Rempis, Macie Stewart, Lia Kohl, Christof Kurzmann and Jason Stein. This is her second year curating the Experimental Sound Studio Option Series and Catalytic Sound Festival.

gabby fluke-mogul is a New York-based violinist, improviser, composer, educator, organizer and doula. Weaving within the threads of avant and free jazz, with deep roots in improvised and experimental music, their music has been described as “embodied, visceral and virtuosic” and “the most striking sound in improvised music in years”. gabby is humbled to have collaborated with Nava Dunkelman, Joanna Mattrey, Ava Mendoza, Charles Burnham, Fred Frith, Luke Stewart, Zeena Parkins, Tcheser Holmes, Lester St. Louis, William Parker, and Pauline Oliveros among many other musicians, poets, dancers and visual
artists.

Feeler Gauge:

Feeler Gauge is drummer Dan Capecchi, bassist Matt Engle, and saxophonist Bryan Rogers. They perform completely unrehearsed spontaneous compositions that draw vocabulary from European chamber music, Black American music of the 1960s and 70s, and jazz, but with their own unique language and identity. The trio plays with a shared vision and sense of trust that only comes from a lifetime of camaraderie and collaboration. Capecchi, Engle, and Rogers have been playing together since 2003 when they formed the critically acclaimed free-jazz quartet Shot ⨉ Shot along with saxophonist Dan Scofield. Originally conceived as a spin-off, Feeler Gauge became the primary focus when the quartet dissolved.

In addition to their work together, members of the band have played with Chad Taylor, Bobby Zankel, Sonic Liberation Front, Sunny Murray, Oliver Lake, Muhal Richard Abrams, Steve Coleman, David Murray, Pheeroan akLaff, and many others. Feeler Gauge is celebrating the release of their debut recording Welcome Denizen, available now on Hightwo Records.

Jordan Sand:

Jordan Sand is an American bassist, vocalist, improviser and composer based in Trondheim, Norway. Her solo music, described as "Joni Mitchell meets Ligeti" (Omaha Under the Radar), blends song, free improv and noise to haunting effects. Blurring the lines between bowed bass and siren voice, Sand delivers new myths from familiar acoustics, fusing strings and chords into an organ-like sound that transcends the sum of two parts. She has lived in four countries and ten cities, driven twice cross-continent in July, and plays on a Romanian double bass of otherwise unknown origin.

accessibility: two steps from street to venue.
