Event description

Do you like playing cooperative board games with others?

Are you interested in how we can adapt to climate change?

Would you like to be part of an exciting community engagement activity?

City of Whittlesea Council is looking for 8 community members who are interested in helping us trial a new in-person climate adaptation game and get trained to run the game as a Game Guide.

The Emergency Management and Sustainable Environment teams are currently working with Amble Studio and Deakin University to create Whittlesea's own version of The Adaptation Game

Expressions of interest are open from now until 11am on Friday 29 March.

You must live, work, or play in the City of Whittlesea municipality to be selected. A diverse range of applicants will be sought to fully represent our municipality.

The Adaptation Game is an actual board game that gets played by community members and includes stories and scenarios based on heatwaves, extreme weather, and bush and grass fires that could impact the municipality. Through cooperating with fellow gamers, players learn how best to prepare for emergencies and how to connect with services Council and others offer.

It's a fun way to connect with your neighbours, learn about your community, and become better prepared. Other councils like Merri-bek have also created their own versions of The Adaptation Game. You can hear about their experience in this video. You don't need to be a gamer, or good at games to play!

The Play and Plan game is Thursday 30 May 9am-2pm. In this session you will learn how to play the game, as well as, give us feedback on ways to improve it.

How to register your interest:

  • Click on "Get tickets" (for this event, top right button)
  • Provide your contact information
  • Answer the screening questions and tell us why you'd like to become a Game Guide

If you're successfully selected to become a Game Guide, you will be contacted by City of Whittlesea staff and invited to the Play and Plan gaming session. Your feedback on the game will help us improve it. After you know how to run the game, you will be encouraged and supported to set up and run games at local libraries, comic book shops, schools and other public places.

If you're not successful in being selected as a Game Guide for this round, you will be added to a wait list for future game trainings.

If you are interested but have questions, please contact sustainability@whittlesea.vic.gov.au.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work, the Wurundjeri Willum Clan and Taungurung Peoples and pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
