    Event description

As part of CERES Joe's Market Garden's Festival of Flowers here is a unique opportunity for those interested in stitching and embroidering with natural indigo-dyed materials.

Under our guidance you will dye fabric and threads in vats made with indigo extracted from Japanese Indigo plants grown here at Joe’s, amongst the flowers, over this past summer. If the season allows we will also wander into the garden beds to pick some leaf material for direct fresh leaf dyeing of threads.

Included in the workshop fee are hoop sized pieces of cotton and linen fabrics, cotton, wool and linen threads, which will all be prepared for dyeing in advance. Participants will also enjoy a cup of garden herbal tea.

If you wish you may also purchase an additional pack of silk materials for $10.

At the conclusion of the workshop you’ll be given washing instructions for when you take your fabric and threads home. Then it’s over to you to create something unique with your local-indigo dyed materials.

Your tutors are Peta and Merri: part time gardeners, natural dyers, textile makers and citizen scientists. Indigo obsessed!

** The location for this event is a working urban farm, and the event will take place outside. In the event of rain we will move undercover.
