What We'll Do

We’ll start at 2.00 pm with a welcome and introduction. We like to visit a range of different gardens, each as unique as the gardeners who live there. It’s wonderful to see the diverse garden styles, approaches, and plants that can be grown in our bioregion.

This month will be a special experience with a visit to Jenni Wren's Edible and Medicinal Garden. Jenni is a qualified herbalist and this urban garden is the home of Wren Herbal.

What We'll See

A few words from Jenni:

My garden is located on a 1200sqm town block where I try to make the most of the space that I have - on a limited budget!! Chooks are a blessing as well as a nuisance, so I’ve erected a “paddock” system to rotate them around, depending on what is growing where! Using recycled materials, volunteer seedlings as well as seed saving processes plays a large part in the success of the garden . My brother is a great help to me, sourcing recycled materials for composting, worm farms, pathways, building structures and chook fencing! Many plants are grown over arches, up fences and frames to increase the use of ‘Air’ space.

The Story Behind the Garden

Like most gardens, mine is an unfinished canvas with many plans and ideas yet to come to fruition! The garden commenced approx. 10 years ago with a small hand-dug patch, but very quickly changed to ‘no dig’ with great success. Everything (apart from a couple of gifted succulents) is medicinal and/or edible with many herbs/plants being used and shared with clients in my Natural Health business. Due to space limitations, the variety of trees that I have planted are maintained to a size suitable for the block. The garden provides me with much joy and also acts as a stress relief for me, as well as providing space where I can create video’s and hold informational Workshops. What I especially love about the garden is that it seems to evolve each year into something new.

My philosophy and belief is that people can be their own healer - herbs along with eating plans appropriate to identified needs, is an important part of my client treatment plans. With the use of whole foods, simple plants and herbs in our daily lives, as well as commitment, it is definitely possible to regain health. The saying ‘fresh is best’ encouraged me many years ago to eat “whole” food and to create my own medicines eg. tinctures, ointments, infusions, vinegars, fruit wines, fermented foods and much more. This is also why I hold Workshops at home… to ensure that skills that were once common knowledge, can be retained and passed on to future generations.

Do you have surplus?

We encourage you to bring your surplus produce, plants, seeds, books, craft supplies, and resources to share with others at our events.

Some ideas of what you could bring include – fruit, vegetables, herbs, eggs, honey, milk, jams, pickles, preserves, jars, ferments, starters, SCOBYs, seeds, plants, seedlings, cuttings, tubers, pots, tools, gardening magazines, permaculture books, recipes, patterns, manure, coffee grounds, compost additives, worms, mealworms, wool, fabric, craft supplies, soap, natural cleaning products, plastic alternatives, produce bags – the list is extensive.

Please bring whatever you can and then take home whatever you need within our culture of generosity and free sharing

Directions and Parking

Some parking is available in Donna Court - a cul-de-sac to the eastern side of my property. Further parking is available around the corner in Heather Street, to the south of the property; as well as immediately across the road in Wuth Street.

Access

People who are ‘ambulant challenged’ are able to come into and around some of the block however they may find it difficult to access other parts of the garden. The refreshment area/share table etc will be accessible to stroller/wheelchair/walking frames.

Everyone is welcome including children with close adult supervision for their safety.

Cost

Financial Members of Permaculture Toowoomba Inc. - Free
First-time Visitors to a Permaculture Toowoomba Inc. Event - Free
Non-Members - $10 per person
Children attending with an Adult - Free (but please book so we know the total numbers)

Membership

Annual Membership of Permaculture Toowoomba Inc. is due by 31 December each year. It's only $40 per person or $30 for a second or subsequent adult living in the same home. After 30 June, fees are 1/2 price for 1/2 year.

If you join now, membership is valid for until the end of 2024.

Members can attend all events and workshops during the year at no cost. You can pay your membership at checkout when you book to attend this event.
