GARDEN DAY 'Permaculture Workshops' with Mauri & Maddie
The Details:
In this Permaculture Workshop we will learn about
PLANT USES, Food, Medicine & Art
Sunday, 1st November | 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Yandina Community Gardens
Step into the garden for an interactive day of learning designed for everyone, from those taking their very first steps in Permaculture to seasoned gardeners looking for a fresh perspective.
We’ve traded the power-point slides and lengthy presentations for hands-on interaction. Using the Principles and Ethics of Permaculture as our design framework, we will learn directly from the landscape and each other.
In this Late spring Edition, we will be learning about our connection to the plants in the garden and their uses, whether their purpose is to become food on our table, medicine for our bodies, or an expression of art. Beyond the benefit to humans, we'll touch on how plants, especially native ecosystems, can support all life around us.
Learn about highly-producing plants in the area, Food and Medicine Security, and Botanical Eco-dyeing to give old clothes new life.
Special Guest: Sophie Waters
Sophie is a local medicinal plant enthusiast and home herbalist with a background in Bushcraft, Conservation and horticulture. A current Animal Ecology undergraduate at UniSC, Sophie brings her passion for all things ecology, and years of plant and ecosystem knowledge to Garden Day.
**Please bring a piece of clothing (ideally natural fibre like cotton etc) for the eco-printing and dyeing with native plants and found plants/flowers from the gardens. It's the perfect way to hide stains or give old clothing new life.
**Please note that the workshop will go ahead in all weather conditions. As a wet weather backup plan, we will have indoor activities as an alternative - such as medicinal herbal salve making, or making a meal/condiment from the garden to share.
The Experience:
Ice breaker: We’ll begin with a fun, dynamic intro session to get to know each other before we start our garden exploration.
Walk & Observe: Practice the art of "Reading the landscape", Observe to understand what's happening in nature in spring-time and how this impacts your role in the garden.
Talk & Learn: Forget the classroom. This is a dynamic session. Expect plenty of movement, active participation, and time to get your specific gardening questions and "doubts" answered by the facilitators and other participants.
Interact: Based on our observations, we’ll choose a site for a collective "Action", a hands-on project to improve the garden, participation is encouraged but optional.
Morning Tea & Connection: We’ll pause mid-morning to share a cuppa, relax, and swap stories with fellow participants in the beauty of the garden.
(Abundant morning tea included)
