Gardening at Waverley Cemetery Open Day

Support our volunteer efforts to beautify the stunning Waverley Cemetery by paying us a visit and joining us for some light refreshments at the Gardening at Waverley Cemetery open day this spring.

Join us between 10am to 12pm on Sunday 11 October to discover one of Waverley’s best kept secrets and meet some of the caring volunteers and locals bringing the cemetery back to life!

10am to 11am | Meet our volunteers and learn about their work

Join us for a tour of some of the planted areas from 10am and enjoy a light morning tea with the volunteer gardeners. 

Meet at the main roundabout anytime from 10am to 11am for a short tour and morning tea

11am to 12pm | Observe nature through citizen science

Learn how to observe nature and record sightings of native plants and animals using the free iNaturalist app.

Gain the citizen science skills to contribute to building data on insects, birds and reptiles in the local area. Get an understating of how to ID insects and birds, take photos and record observations. Bring your smart phone along with the free iNaturalist app downloaded, or we can help you with this on the day.

Meet at the main roundabout just before 11am for a discussion on citizen science. This event requires a separate registration.

Waverley Cemetery at Bronte is one of Australia’s most beautiful cemeteries and offers stunning ocean views, a fascinating glimpse into our past, wonderful cemetery art, and a great opportunity to enjoy beauty through the stunning nature of the site. 

Gardening at Waverley Cemetery began in 2023 and aims to transform the abandoned and neglected areas of the cemetery through native planting by creating new, lush and thriving habitats that can survive the harsh coastal climate and supporting our beautiful native birds, lizards and insects.

This is a free event, but please ensure you register for a ticket.

Meeting Point:

Meet us at the main roundabout in the middle of Waverley Cemetery and one of our friendly volunteers will take you on a tour.

Please note: Waverley Cemetery contains sloping surfaces and uneven ground. We encourage you to wear flat soled, close-toed shoes on your visit.

Parking is available for free on the streets outside the cemetery.
