Community Rhythm Circle

Join us for a relaxed and welcoming evening of rhythm, music and community.

These monthly gatherings offer an opportunity to slow down, meet new people, and experience the simple pleasure of making music together. Whether you're completely new to drumming or have played before, you'll be welcomed into a supportive group where participation is valued far more than musical ability.

Each session weaves together the rich traditions of West African ensemble drumming with playful rhythm activities that encourage listening, creativity, connection and wellbeing. Along the way you'll gradually learn traditional rhythms and ensemble pieces while also enjoying activities that support confidence, communication, presence and joyful participation.

There is no pressure to perform or "get it right." The emphasis is on experiencing rhythm together, learning at a comfortable pace, and enjoying the unique sense of connection that naturally emerges when people gather to listen, play and create as a group.

Our first gathering is offered free of charge as an opportunity to meet one another and experience the class. Following this, sessions will continue on a monthly basis. Please note that places are limited, and registration is essential.

Drums are provided, and no previous musical experience is necessary.

About West African Drumming

The Djembe and accompanying bass drums (Dunun) originate from the Mandé, Malinké and Voltaic cultures of West Africa, where music has long been woven into everyday life through celebration, storytelling, work, ceremony and community gathering.

These traditions are built around listening, cooperation and shared participation. Rather than one person carrying the music, each rhythm contributes to a larger whole, inviting everyone to find their place within the ensemble.

Our classes honour these traditions while creating an accessible and welcoming space for people of all backgrounds to experience the joy, vitality and sense of belonging that collective rhythm-making can offer.

About Djulz Chambers

Djulz Chambers is a music educator, therapeutic rhythm facilitator and djembe practitioner whose work explores the relationship between rhythm, wellbeing and community.

Her musical journey began in 2005 while living with traditional communities in northern Burkina Faso, where she spent several years immersed in the West African ensemble percussion traditions. Since then, she has maintained a close connection with Malinké, Mandé and Voltaic cultural custodians as a continuing student of these musical traditions.

For more than fifteen years Djulz has shared rhythm with people of all ages through schools, community groups, youth programs and wellbeing settings across Australia. Her approach combines a deep respect for the cultural traditions from which the music comes with a warm, inclusive style of facilitation that welcomes complete beginners alongside more experienced musicians.

She believes rhythm has a unique capacity to bring people together, fostering creativity, confidence, belonging and the simple enjoyment of making music as a community.
