This event is organised by the volunteers of the Melbourne Renew Members’ Branch

This is an in-person event designed for anyone considering the pros and cons of replacing a methane gas cooktop with an induction cooktop as part of a plan to “get off gas”. With many questions to be answered, there will be a panel of speakers to provide expert guidance.

Dr Kristen Pearson (Doctors for the Environment Australia) will highlight studies showing indoor gas combustion causes childhood asthma, allergies and other health conditions.
Chris Lehmann (Master Electricians Australia) is a long time electrical industry professional. He is well placed to discuss the induction technology and, importantly, the likely installation issues and costs. Householder concerns about wiring and switchboard changes are common.

Laura Boulton (Head Chef, Cassette Kensington) brings the knowledge and experience of a cooking professional. She will share her experience with preparing restaurant meals using induction cooktops. Someone who cooks for a living is an ideal source of information to resolve the ongoing debate about the merits of gas versus induction cooking.

By the end, attendees will be aware of the health benefits, knowledgeable about the likely modifications & costs and confident their cooking will be just as good.

Speakers

Dr Kristen Pearson

Dr Kristen Pearson is a physician working at Northern Health in Melbourne. She has been an active member of Doctors for the Environment Australia for 15 years and currently sits on the Environmental Sustainability committee at Northern Health Kristen is not a good cook but has recently switched her gas cooktop for induction, and is relieved to now have a gas-free household.

Chris Lehmann

As a long time Industry Professional and Employer, Chris Lehmann is excited to be able to put that experience into supporting and promoting the industry he loves and an association he has had such a long history of service with. Working with the great Advocacy Team at Master Electricians, Chris helps produce the best policy outcomes for MEA members and the industry. In his current role, he actively works towards increasing the professionalism and productivity of the trade sector, embracing new technologies to enhance business productivity, as well as managing safety and reducing risk.

Laura Boulton

Laura Boulton (@the.wandering.chef) is a chef with 23 years’ experience. She is currently working as head chef at Cassette, a zero food waste cafe set up by Assemble Futures in their Kensington project. This apartment block is a zero emissions building so the entire site, including Laura’s kitchen, is run on renewable energy. Laura is passionate about reducing waste and working towards a more sustainable society.
