PD5 - Geography Pathways from 7-12: Building engagements through skills and assessment

Join fellow Geography teachers for a practical, collaborative professional learning day focused on engagement, assessment, skills development and strengthening the pathway from lower secondary Geography through to ATAR.

HALF DAY (MORNING SESSION)— Years 7–10 Focus | 9:00 am–12:00 pm
Designed for teachers working with Years 7–10, this morning program explores strategies to increase student engagement and Geography uptake, compare assessment practices across schools, and strengthen the mapping and geographical skills that provide a foundation for ATAR success.

HALF DAY (AFTERNOON SESSION)— Years 11–12 Focus | 1:00 pm–4:00 pm
Designed for teachers working with Years 11–12, this afternoon program focuses on inquiry-based fieldwork, precise assessment writing and consistent marking. Teachers will work collaboratively to refine fieldwork tasks, develop stronger assessment questions and calibrate marking against a shared key.

FULL DAY — Years 7–12 | 9:00 am–4:00 pm
Teachers working across Years 7–12, or whole Geography teams, are welcome to attend both sessions. The full-day program provides an opportunity to connect the Years 7–10 and Years 11–12 curriculum, build cross-school networks and develop a clearer Year 10 → ATAR pathway.

What to expect

Across the day, participants will take part in facilitated workshops, networking, assessment moderation, practical skills activities and collaborative planning. Sessions are designed to be hands-on and immediately useful, with opportunities to share approaches, learn from colleagues and leave with ideas and resources to implement in your own classroom.

Please bring: a sample assessment task, including a marking key or rubric if available, and your school's current grade descriptors.
