Local people. Remarkable adventures.
Join us for the next Gearshop Sessions, which will celebrate some of the people doing great things in our local outdoor community. Hear first-hand from local legends in trail running, adventure racing, and climbing, with plenty of time to ask questions at the end of each session. Plus there’ll be food tastings, spot prizes, and discounts on the night.

Each talk is limited to 30 people, so register to reserve your place. Registration is free, and you can attend one, two, or all three sessions. If a session is full, you can join the waitlist, and we'll let you know if a place becomes available.

5.15pm–6.00pm | Shane Mickel: Trail Running
A true ambassador for trail running in the Nelson community, Shane has taken on some serious ultra-running challenges over the years. Hear about the events he’s taken on, how he trains, some useful tips, what keeps him motivated, and what’s next on the agenda. Prize: A nutrition bundle + a Salomon Active Skin 12 Running Vest will be up for grabs.
6.15pm–7.00pm | Team Gearshop: Adventure Racing
With Rachel Baker and Sakkie Meyer Rachel and Sakkie are both highly experienced adventure racers. They’ll share stories from the races they’ve taken on, how they prepare and train, the skills you need, the gear that matters, and how to get started if adventure racing is something you’ve always wanted to try. Prize: A team entry into the Gearshop Tasman Adventure Race on 14 November, with the winner able to choose the 4-hour or 8-hour event.
7.15pm–8.30pm | Andrew Palmer: Behind the Takaka Hill Via Ferrata
The Via Ferrata on Takaka Hill has quickly become a hugely popular local adventure, but what did it actually take to create it? Andrew, the man behind the climbing routes, will share the story of how the Via Ferrata came together, from the original idea through to planning and building the two routes on the hill. Prize: 2 x Via Ferrata climbing gear kit hire to be won during Andrew’s session.
More happening on the shop floor
There’ll be plenty to explore between sessions too. Stop by the Gearshop Aid Station to sample some food and nutrition products. There’ll be a fully kitted-out trail running display with clothing, bags, shoes, poles and other gear. Rachel and Sakkie will be bringing along some of their adventure racing kit, including a packraft, maps, and their fully loaded bike, so you can get a real sense of the gear and loads they carry. We’ll also have a climbing gear display, with Hamish Pirie on hand to answer questions and talk through the equipment. The store will be open throughout the evening, so there’ll be plenty of time to browse, ask questions, and take advantage of the discounts on the night.
