    Event description

Do you know that keeping our food waste out of landfills is one of the most impactful climate actions individuals can take?

Join Gecko, Clytie Binder and local compost champions Seed the Ground, in a talk to highlight the crucial role that community-based composting plays in creating a circular economy and strengthening community connection to each other and to our food system. Clytie will kick off the night sharing her experiences as a Churchill Fellow, investigating community-based composting initiatives across the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. She will also share recommendations for policymakers, industry, and communities, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach and the adoption of best practices to support and enhance community composting efforts.

Natalie from Seed the Ground will follow, sharing how and why Seed The Ground got into gear and why they enjoy supporting our community's circular economy growth. Natalie and her team at Seed the Ground are fully committed to getting their hands dirty for a clean cause. The focus of Seed the Ground is diverting food waste from landfill through food waste collection services and local community-run compost hubs.

The talk will commence at 7 pm, so please arrive 15 minutes early to ensure you have enough time to grab a drink or a snack and have a yarn with the other attendees. Come along to learn about community composting, gardening, and share ideas to improve composting options in our community. Whether you're a seasoned composter or compost curious, we'd love to see you there!

Clytie has extensive experience in local government, community organisations, and schools, where she has developed innovative behavior change programs including Brisbane’s community compost program, aimed at reducing landfill waste, fostering community engagement, and empowering citizens to drive positive change. Recently, she completed a Churchill Fellowship, during which she investigated community-based composting initiatives across the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. Since returning, Clytie has been actively sharing her insights and co-founded the Local Community Compost Alliance (LOCCAL), an organization dedicated to supporting community compost initiatives throughout Australia.

Natalie is a big advocate for Not-for-profits, those companies who's purpose comes from passion. It's a challenging place to work but with big rewards.. and our futures sustainability is going to need the drive of more NFP's and social enterprises!
