In his second solo museum exhibition, self-taught artist Gee Horton presents Chapter 4: In Another Lifetime at the Contemporary Arts Center - an immersive narrative experience unfolding across two galleries.
The exhibition unfolds as a spatial adaptation of Chapter 4: In Another Lifetime, a fictional narrative by Horton that serves as the conceptual foundation for the exhibition and will be released as a limited-edition artist book publication on opening night at the Contemporary Arts Center. This narrative-driven installation follows Horton’s loosely autobiographical account of Freeman Little, a 37-year-old Black man living with Guent Bu Wa, a rare hereditary sleep disorder that causes vivid, prophetic dreams. Moving between the port cities of New Bern, North Carolina, and Ziguinchor, Senegal, the story traces a dreamlike journey shaped by memory, ancestral connection, and transformation.
Through large-scale photorealist drawings, photography, collage, video, and installation, Horton reflects on Black masculinity, generational memory, and childhood - exploring themes of safety, vulnerability, and the fragile boundary between freedom and protection. Visitors are invited to move through the exhibition as they would a story, encountering layered moments that unfold across space and experience.
