Description
Extreme heat and heatwaves disproportionately impact women, girls and gender diverse people
This impact widens and deepens when people are marginalised because of race, disability, age and other factors, or because of poverty and disadvantage. Many women bear the brunt of the impacts of extreme heat alongside the responsibility and pressure of caring roles within and outside the home.
This event will explore the gendered impacts of heat, with a special focus on the Greater Sydney region, followed by practical activities to help us explore intersections, challenges and strengths together. These are designed as an opportunity to connect, learn, share lived experiences and voices across communities.
Join us to understand how gender impacts how safe you are in a heatwave, how rising temperatures intersect with issues of gender justice, and what can be done to support women, girls and gender diverse people to be leaders in heat resilience. Add your voice in the room as we explore community driven solutions toward building equitable heat resilience.
There will be catered meal breaks on the day, please be sure to register so that your dietary needs are noted.
Keynote
Dr Rebecca Huntley is one of Australia's foremost researchers on social trends and is the author of numerous books including 'How to Talk About Climate Change in a Way that Makes a Difference'. She is the Chair of the Advisory Board of Australian Parents for Climate Action and a member of the Advisory Group for the Climate Solutions Centre at the Australian Museum and the Sydney Environment Institute. For a number of years, she ran her own research and consultancy firm working closely with climate and environment NGOs, government and business on climate change strategy and communication and is now Director of Research at the agency 89DegreesEast.

Angelica is a community advocate, social and health researcher, and policy practitioner. She manages the Future Healthy Countdown 2030 and is a Chief Investigator on transformative research initiatives addressing social inequality, adolescent health, participation, and international development. She is the Vice Chair of African Women Australia and is the producer of the award-nominated podcast series 'Sink or Swim' | Estelle Grech is a Churchill Fellow and Policy Manager at the Committee for Sydney, leading work on planning, housing and social equity. She brings experience across senior ministerial advisory roles, local government and consulting, with a strong track record in shaping policy to create more inclusive, sustainable and liveable cities. | Prof. Adrienne Gordon is a senior staff specialist Neonatologist in the RPA centre for newborn care and a clinical Professor in the disciplines of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology and Child and Adolescent Health in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at The University of Sydney. She is a Co-Chief Investigator on a Heat and Health Research Centre project examining the reasons behind the risks heat pose during pregnancy. | Prof. Abby Mellick Lopes is a social design expert and design researcher in the Design Studies program at UTS. She was a founder and co-leads the multi-institutional, internationally recognised initiative Cooling the Commons, which explores the capacity of communities to respond to urban heat and the role of the built environment in creating socially just and liveable futures in Western Sydney and other hot cities. |
