Join us for a public session titled Gender and Violence: Current Issues in South Korea. This hybrid event will explore the challenges and current issues surrounding gender-based violence in the Korean context. Gain insights from three thought leaders from Korea, engage in meaningful discussions, and connect with fellow attendees working in this field.

Speaker information

Hyun Mee Kim (Yonsei University)

김현미 연세대학교 교수

Hyun Mee Kim is a professor in the Department of Cultural Anthropology at Yonsei University, South Korea.

Her research focuses on the political economy of gender and labour, globalisation and migration, refugee issues, feminist cultural theories, and ecofeminism.

She authored several works, including Cultural Translation in a Global Era (2005, Korean), We Always Leave Home: Becoming Migrants in South Korea (2014, Korean; 2019, Chinese), Feminist Lifestyle (2021, Korean), and A Society of Flawless Fragments: Work Experiences and Adventures of Korean Women from Their 20s to 60s (2023, Korean). Additionally, she coedited Multiculturalism in East Asia: A Transnational Exploration of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan (2016, English). She is a member of the Migrant Women’s Human Rights Forum.

Sooah Kim (Seoul National University)

김수아 서울대학교 교수

Kim Soo-Ah is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at Seoul National University. Her research areas include popular culture from feminist perspectives and gender aspects in the field of digital media literacy. Her publications include Key Issues in Media and Gender (2019, coauthored) and Game Contents and Gender Diversity (2022) (all in Korean).

Ranhee Song (Korean Women’s Hot-line)

송란희 한국여성의전화 상임대표

Ranhee Song is a representative of Korea Women’s Hotline. Through Film Festivals for Women’s rights (FIWOM) and various training sessions, she has supported survivors of gender-based violence, monitored and proposed relevant policies, and conducted awareness campaigns for 20 years. She is a coauthor of South Korea Women’s White Paper, A Story No One Knew, Spanking for Love; Written as Discipline, Read as Violence, That Is Not Trivial at All, The Domestic Violence Survey in 2022 and more.

Hyein Ellen Cho (Monash University)

조혜인 모내시대학교 교수

Hyein Ellen Cho is a lecturer in Korean studies at Monash University. Her research areas include gender-based violence, migration, gender equality, and Asian studies. She is currently working on a monograph tentatively titled ‘Gender, Migration and Family Violence in Australia: The Translational Experiences of the Korean Diasporic Women’. She is also the project lead for the multi-year international collaboration program named Advancing Collaborative Conversations on Gender Equality in Australia and Korea, of which this public seminar is a part.
