Gene Technology | Speaker Series @ Tūranga

Should synthetic biology be used to save threatened species? This is the key question that divides scientists from around the world. On July 9 we will hear from two University of Canterbury scientists who share the same hallway in the School of Biological Sciences, and how and why their approach differed on this important scientific debate. 

The evening will include an introduction to the International Union of Conservation for Nature (IUCN) and how its mission might be augmented with synthetic biology, along with a primer on synthetic biology. The pros and cons of adopting a case-by-case approach for use and release of organisms genetically modified through synthetic biology for conservation and agriculture will also be traversed.
