Create sources of funding, assets and income to support long-term community wellbeing.

Generating community capital is about identifying and creating sources of funding, income, assets, and capital value that support community and economic wellbeing.

Communities need the ability to generate their own capital to drive change, reduce dependency on external funding, and invest in what matters locally. This means more than just generating money — it includes developing enterprises, infrastructure, land, and other assets that create ongoing local value. When communities can create, grow, and manage these forms of capital, they build stronger economic foundations, greater self-reliance, and the power to shape their own futures.

In this session, we explore how communities and collaborators can generate capital in ways that are locally grounded, inclusive and regenerative — ensuring that the benefits of new assets and enterprises remain in the community and contribute to long-term prosperity and resilience.

The insights from this session are relevant across a wide range of challenges — from funding local services and strengthening small business to supporting new industries, sustainability transitions and regional economic development.

Communities learn practical ways to generate capital locally; enablers learn how to create environments, incentives, and investment structures that make local generation possible and sustainable.

What will you learn?

In this session, you will:

Understand what “generating capital” means within a Community Capital system — and why it is foundational to long-term wellbeing.
Explore different sources of income, funding and assets that can be generated locally
Discover practical pathways to create new income streams, assets and enterprises aligned with community priorities.
Understand how to design generation strategies that are inclusive, community-led and regenerative — rather than extractive or short-term.
Explore real-world examples of communities and collaborators successfully generating and growing local capital.
Begin applying generation strategies to your own context — whether at a community, organisational or systems level.

By the end of this session, you will have practical insights and tools to begin generating and growing capital in ways that strengthen local resilience, self-reliance and long-term shared prosperity.

About the Community Capital Learning Series

The Community Capital Learning Series is modular and structured around the essential functions of capital. These functions shape how our communities and economies operate. They influence how assets, resources and relationships are created, accessed, owned, governed and exchanged — and how value and benefits flow over time.

Each module explores one core function in depth, combining foundational understanding with practical application. If you are also interested in other areas visit: https://www.centreforcommunitycapital.org/
