    Event description

Please Note: as many of the sessions are now full in person, additional interested people can register to watch a live stream online on Zoom.

Academic staff are invited to join us for an in-person event about generative AI, where we will hear from Professor Adam Bridgeman and Professor Danny Liu of the University of Sydney as they demystify generative AI and share how their institution uses two-lane assessment in practice.

Generative AI is radically changing how and what we assess, with a need to balance assurance of learning with our need to equip our graduates for a rapidly changing world. We now have in effect two “lanes”: assessment of learning and assessment for learning.

Professors Danny Liu and Adam Bridgeman are leading the response to generative AI at the University of Sydney, covering aspects such as academic development, assessment redesign, policy reform, governance, the development of AI agents and partnering with students.

Attendees are welcome to register for one or more sessions, depending upon your availability.

    Welcome and Acknowledgement of Country9:00am - 9:30am
    Session 1 - Generative AI Essentials9:30am - 10:30am
A bite-sized session to familiarise yourself with generative AI and its implications for teaching, learning, and assessment.
We will focus on how to practically use AI to support education, what AI means for assessments, and how to talk to students about AI and help them.
    • Gain an understanding of how generative AI works
    • Find out about available AI tools
    • Learn some simple and effective ways to prompt generative AI
    • Discover some uses of AI to save time and enhance your teaching and assessment practices
    • Consider different assessment approaches in light of AI
    Session 2 - Rethinking Assessments11:00am - 1:00pm
Generative AI is radically changing how and what we assess, with a need to balance assurance of learning with our need to equip our graduates for a rapidly changing world.
In this session, we will focus on these two “lanes”: assessment of learning and assessment for learning. We will also workshop ideas for assessment redesign.
You are invited to bring along existing or rethought assessments for discussion.

    You will:

    • Explore the realities of assessment in the generative AI era
    • Discuss what the two-lane approach to assessment means for curriculum and unit design
    • Consider the strengths and weaknesses of our present assessments
    • Learn about new assessment designs from colleagues in an open environment
    Session 3 - Effectively Prompting and Steering AI2:00pm - 3:45pm

A hands-on workshop exploring how you can leverage generative AI like ChatGPT to improve teaching (for you) and learning (for students).
We will focus on how to practically use AI for real world teaching and learning scenarios.
We will also introduce how to create steerable and accurate AI agents for teaching that can behave how you as educators need them to.

    You will:

    • Gain a deeper understanding of how generative AI works
    • Be able to design effective prompts to save time and improve your practices as an educator
    • Consider how evidence-based educational practices can be supported by generative AI
    • Discuss how generative AI tools can be designed by educators to reduce their workload and improve student learning
    Session 4 - AI Policy and Strategy4:00pm - 5:00pm
A discussion-based workshop covering the implications of generative AI for teaching and learning, graduate outcomes, assessment and academic integrity.
The workshop will be of interest to those interested in learning about the policy changes that the University of Sydney is making in response to generative AI and its action plan submitted to TEQSA and for those engaged in the process at ANU.

    You will:

    • Discuss the implications for academic integrity, assessment principles, policies, procedures, special consideration and assessment adjustments
    • Consider the interaction with ICT and systems
    • Consider privacy, security, ethics, and equity issues
    • Discuss governance issues
