From Genesis to Apocalypse traces a breathtaking arc from the birth of the universe to its final moments.
The concert opens with Darius Milhaud’s La Création du monde, a vibrant, jazz-inflected vision of creation inspired by African mythology. Pulsing rhythms, bluesy harmonies, and colorful textures bring a primordial world to life. In Milhaud's own four-hand piano arrangement, pianists Nelson Ojeda and Christopher Bradshaw capture the work’s infectious energy and rhythmic vitality.
The journey culminates in Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps, one of the most extraordinary chamber works of the 20th century. Written during Messiaen’s imprisonment during World War II, the quartet contemplates the end of time through music of haunting beauty, ecstatic intensity, and profound stillness. Performed by Nelson Ojeda, piano; Kelsey Philbrick, violin; David Newtown, cello; and Kyle Glasgow, clarinet, the work moves between otherworldly sonorities, birdsong, and passages of luminous contemplation.
