Join us for the annual George Briscoe Kerferd Oration, a free community event first held in 2003 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the naming of Beechworth. Held in Victoria’s beautiful Indigo Shire, the Oration honours the legacy of George Briscoe Kerferd (1831–1889)—an energetic community leader, Premier of Victoria, and Judge of the Supreme Court.
Each year, an eminent speaker is invited to challenge our thinking, foster meaningful discussion, and promote active citizenship.
In 2026, we welcome Professor Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO, acclaimed soprano, composer, educator, artistic director and proud Yorta Yorta and Yuin woman. A member of the Stolen Generations, Deborah has become one of Australia’s most influential arts leaders, using music and storytelling to amplify First Nations voices and histories.
Her groundbreaking work includes Pecan Summer, inspired by the 1939 Cummeragunja Walk-Off and her family's connection to the Murray River region. A passionate advocate for human rights and cultural representation, Deborah has dedicated her career to creating opportunities for First Nations artists and enriching Australia's cultural landscape through music, education and leadership.
The Oration is proudly sponsored by Indigo Shire Council, WAW Credit Union, and Quercus Beechworth.
