About the Workshop
Getting Free is an all-levels improvisational workshop led by Majesty Royale-Jackson that explores creativity as a practice of freedom. Drawing from Majestyβs interdisciplinary practice, the workshop invites participants to experiment with forms of expression and discover what becomes possible when approaching creative work without predetermined expectations.
Through guided rounds of writing, drawing, sounding, and movement, participants will explore improvisation as a way of making, responding, and generating ideas. Working individually and collectively, participants will be encouraged to build on one anotherβs ideas, take creative risks, and follow unexpected directions. Rather than working toward a finished product, the workshop emphasizes curiosity, experimentation, and the freedom to create without the pressure to produce.
Presented as part of NorthStar Church of the Artsβ 2026 Spotlight Exhibition Series, Getting Free accompanies Majesty Royale-Jacksonβs exhibition, gleaminβ: and none is barren among them. The workshop extends the exhibitionβs exploration of transformation and creative misuse into a shared, embodied experience, offering another way to engage with the possibilities of experimentation and creative expression.
No previous artistic experience is required. All materials, including paper and writing utensils, will be provided. Participants are welcome to engage at their own pace and in ways that feel comfortable to them.
