Description

Learn how to use AI safely, confidently and practically in everyday life. This two-night workshop is designed for complete beginners who are curious about AI and want a friendly place to start.

No previous AI experience needed. Nothing to install beforehand. No jargon — just practical guidance, hands-on support and time to practise.

Night one: getting started

You will get set up with Claude on your own device and learn how to ask clear questions that get useful responses. You will then put it to work on something real: writing a message to someone who matters, and asking AI to explain a confusing bill, form or enquiry in plain English.

You will also learn how to use AI safely, including how to recognise an AI voice scam and what personal information should never be entered into these tools.

You will leave night one with one simple practice activity to try during the week, so you can build confidence before the second session.

Night two: making it useful for you

We start with questions from the week, including anything that did not work as expected. You will learn how to check whether an AI answer is reliable, and what to do when it is not.

The rest of the evening is hands-on. You will work on a real task of your own with support beside you, learn how to use a photo instead of typing everything out, and try speaking to AI rather than typing, which can make it easier and more accessible.

You will leave with a simple habit that helps you keep using AI safely and practically after the workshop ends.

Who this is for

This workshop is ideal for anyone who has never used AI and wants a patient, practical introduction. If you can send an email and use a web browser, you have all the skills you need.

Why only 15 places

Places are limited to 15 so everyone can work on their own device and receive individual support. This is a small, hands-on workshop — not a presentation where you sit and watch from the back of the room.

Cost

$159 for both evenings, including printed workbooks and learning materials. One booking covers both sessions.

When and where

Wednesday 21 October and Wednesday 28 October

5.30pm to 7pm

Doors open at 5.15pm so everyone can get settled without rushing.

The Boardroom, Canberra Southern Cross Club, Woden.

What to bring:

  • Bring your laptop or iPad device charged and your charger too.

  • Know your email password. On the first night you will need your email password, not just the address. If you use an iPad, you may also be asked for your Apple ID password. It is worth finding both before you come.

  • Bring something to explain. Bring something you would like explained in plain English, such as a bill, an insurance letter, a medication or medical document, a phone plan or a set of instructions.

  • Think of someone to write to. Think of someone you would like to write to, and why. It could be a birthday, a thank you, or just to reconnect.

Lineup

  • Bridget Kirby

    Bridget Kirby

Bridget is a Canberra-based AI and digital consultant who advises Australian Government agencies and private enterprise on technology change and the responsible use of artificial intelligence. She founded Plain Speak AI Literacy after noticing how many people were interested in AI but felt unsure, overwhelmed or left behind. Many simply wanted someone to explain what AI is, show where it could be useful in everyday life, and help them try it safely and responsibly. Her small, hands-on workshops teach beginners how to use AI with confidence, in plain English and at their own pace.
