GGA x Dr Heather Bray Scientific Writing Workshops

As part of GGA's four-part professional development program for research and project officers, these bespoke workshops are designed to enhance participants' scientific communication skills with expert guidance from Dr Heather Bray.

Part 1 - Science communication workshop

This workshop covers the essential tools and techniques for communicating research to diverse audiences, including defining communication goals, understanding audience needs, and crafting key messages. It will also explore various communication methods and channels.

Part 2 - Report writing workshop

This workshop covers the key elements of effective report writing, using case studies and examples to demonstrate how to communicate a project's story and impact. Participants will also receive a practical checklist to make their reports more engaging and impactful.

Instructor

Dr Heather Bray

Dr Heather Bray has over 20 years of experience in Science Communication as a practitioner, scholar, teacher, and researcher.

Heather currently coordinates the Master of Science Communication and the undergraduate major and minor in Science Communication. She is the leading coordinator/instructor for all SCOM units offered at Level 2 and above. Heather previously taught science communication and related subjects at the University of Adelaide from 2012 to 2018.

Heather's research explores community understandings of, and attitudes to, the role of science and technology in food production, in particular genetically-modified crops and food, and farm animal welfare. Her work aims to improve communication and build trust between different stakeholders in the agri-food system.

Heather's background is in agricultural science and she has worked as an animal scientist in both Australia and the Netherlands. Before returning to academia, she worked in science centres and agricultural research centres, developing community engagement programs about complex and controversial technologies.

Heather is an active member of the Australian Science Communicators.
