Ghost Rope Workshop with Sonya Rankine–Lakun Mara

Join local First Nations artist Sonya Rankine (Lakun Mara) for a unique cultural and creative experience. Learn how to sculpture using recycled and repurposed ghost ropes from the fishing industry while hearing the Widhadha (shark) Narungga Dreaming story and the learn about the endangered Yalgi (brush-tailed bettong). 

Participants will be guided to create their own Widhadha (shark), guuya (fish) or Yalgi (brush-tailed bettong) nest sculpture using ghost ropes and learning stories connected to Country. 

This hands-on workshop blends environmental sustainability with First Nations cultural knowledge and storytelling and learn about Yalgi and the Marna Banggara project. 

Sonya Rankine is a Narungga, Ngarrindjeri, Ngadjuri and Wirangu artist and founder of Lakun Mara, which means “Weaving Hand” in Ngarrindjeri language. Accessibility:

This workshop will include some sitting and weaving at the Stenhouse Bay Hall rotunda.  

Parking is available at the Stenhouse Bay Hall carpark. There will be short walk to the rotunda on a flat ground. The nearby surface is hard with some loose gravel and may be uneven in some places. There are also some slight inclines to use facilities. There will be some shade and shelter at the rotunda, and toilets available at Stenhouse Bay Hall and Stenhouse Bay Campground (50 and 300 metres respectively from the workshop).  

Who is this event for?

This activity is suitable for families all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
