Event description

Girl Up is a United Nations affiliated women’s empowerment community group based in Brisbane. We invite you to celebrate the launch of our 2024 Podcast season with an evening of live music, nibbles and mingling at The Station Brisbane!

Join us in dancing to the music of a local Brisbane (Meanjin) musician (to be announced), making new like-minded friends and honouring all things women's empowerment! We look forward to annoucing our 2024 podcast season on the evening and answering any questions from the audience about our hopes for the series. So, what are the details?

When: Friday 19th July, 6.30-9.30pm

Where: The Station Brisbane,16 School St, Fortitude Valley

Dress code: Girls night out!

Tickets price includes snacks, non-alcoholic drinks and a musical performance! This event is BYO alcoholic drinks (no glass please, cups will be provided).

Ample street parking is available on side streets nearby and the venue is within 10 minutes walking distance of Fortitude Valley Train Station. If you are travelling via public transport, you can find route options through the Translink app.

The Station has wheelchair accessible parking spaces nearby and is a wheelchair accesible venue. Unfortunately, bathroom facilities on site are not wheelchair accessible. Please do not hesitate to reach out via messenger if you have any access needs we can accommodate. Your comfort is a priority for us.

Girl Up is a United Nations affiliated intersectional women’s empowerment community group based in Brisbane - hosting social, fundraising and advocacy events!

We believe in our mission to provide inclusive, accessible opportunities for grassroots collective action championing women's rights and liberties.

In 2024 so far, our community has raised almost $900 for the Mater Chicks in Pink Foundation, which will provide therapeutic and medical support to people experiencing breast cancer, and almost $400 for One Girl, supporting girls' access to education in Sierra Leone, and contributing to awareness-raising about the 130 million girls currently denied the right to education worldwide. We have also secured over 10 bags of donations for the Zig Zag Young Women’s Resource Shelter - a social service provider supporting women and gender diverse victim-survivors of sexual assault and people experiencing or at-risk of homelessness.

Our final event of the year, a panel discussion addressing the systemic causes violence against women, will provide much needed insight into the profile of gendered violence in Australia, and what can be done to combat gender-based abuse.

Our social media pages promote public education on behalf of feminist causes, including how to perform a breast examination, the history of medical misogyny, support providers assisting people experiencing domestic violence, current rates of domestic violence and femicide, and the symptoms of Endometriosis and other pelvic pain disorders.

We also produce an educational podcast, The Feminist Handbook, spotlighting the advocacy work of young Australian feminists and promoting messages of empowerment, and have provided paid gig opportunities to two young women/gender diverse musicians.

Our work providing community aid wouldn’t be possible without the support of our fabulous members. We would love grow our club and our capacity to support important causes so please feel welcome to come along to our events and invite all of your feminist friends! :)
