Glenn Gould's Guilty Pleasure -- Friday, July 7th, 7pm
Event description
Glenn Gould -- the rather notorious 20th-century pianist and radio personality -- known for his legendary Bach recordings, his singing while playing (including, yes, on said recordings), and his often -- let's be honest -- priggish pronouncements and opinions about composers and music...
Glenn Gould, who loved Bach and shunned many romantic composers, famously said that he played Chopin only for himself, perhaps once or twice a year in a weak moment. Yet he also admired Chopin's skill as a miniaturist and his unparalleled ability to create a "mood" as well as compose for the piano.
Here we pair some of Bach's most beloved pieces -- from the French Suite in G Major, with the only Chopin work Glenn Gould ever played on radio: the glorious, breathtaking Piano Sonata in B Minor.
Hear these works together and see what you think for yourself!
