Public Event IN PERSON and ONLINE OPTION (zoom link to be sent via email morning of event)
Drawing on extensive community-based and participatory research, Dr Hannah Wittman will share insights from her work in agrarian reform, food sovereignty and health equity.
This lecture will compare and contrast the conditions and approaches generating agroecological transitions in diverse global contexts, including Canada, Brazil and Ecuador. Topics include policies that support ecological farming and access to healthy food, including investments in public procurement and farm-to-school programs and the development of open-source digital tools that enable on-farm decision-making for ecological and financial resilience.
Hannah Wittman is a Professor in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and a member of the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm, the UBC Centre for Climate Justice, and the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability . She also leads UBC’s Research Excellence Cluster in Diversified Agroecosystems. Dr. Wittman received her PhD from Cornell University in the field of Development Sociology and served as Project Lead of the World Committee on Global Food Security HLPE Report #16 Promoting youth engagement and employment in agriculture and food systems (2021). She conducts community-based and participatory action research related to food sovereignty, agrarian reform, agroecological transitions, open-source digital agroecology, and health equity in diverse global contexts.
