A Backyard Blueprint for Climate Resilience

Discover how circularity and sustainability come to life in a domestic setting — from homegrown food and solar energy to water-wise systems and thriving biodiversity.

One of the founders of FoodTalks Illawarra, Suzy Pickles, is giving a tour of her home and garden. Suzy and her partner Adam Russell have set up a range of systems on their quarter acre block, Saltbush Corner in Bulli, that carefully consider resources such as water, energy, sunlight, nutrients and materials. Wherever possible resources are circulated through the property, and what may be typically considered 'waste' is celebrated, harvested, shared, saved, repurposed, recycled, reused and rejuvenated.

This one-hour walk-and-talk offers practical inspiration for anyone curious about living lighter on the planet, starting right in their own backyard. Ask questions and get tips of where to start and pitfalls to avoid.

Suzy is studying a PhD at the University of Wollongong, researching how to strengthen the local food system in the Illawarra Shoalhaven region to be healthier, more sustainable and more equitable. She is an avid and passionate home gardener, pickler and preserver.

Adam is a registered architect and integrates principles of regenerative design and permaculture into his practice. Adam has expertise as a designer and thought leader in affordable and alternative housing, public buildings urban design and sustainability.

Together, Suzy and Adam run Saltbush Projects, a multi-disciplinary architecture, design, communications and art enterprise.
