Description

To mark Global Ethics Day (GED), we'll be putting ethics education front and centre. Our expert speakers will be sharing perspectives about ethics education from the academic world, applied philosophy, business and the classroom.

For discussion:

  • What is the latest evidence on the impacts of ethics education?

  • How can we bring ethics into policy, politics, education institutions, workplaces and our personal lives?

  • What challenges might we face in the process?

Featured speakers:

  • Dr Geetanjali Basarkod, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Positive Psychology and Education (IPPE), Australian Catholic University, and lead author of recent study on the impact of ethics education

  • Dr Tim Dean, Senior Philosopher, The Ethics Centre, honorary associate with the University of Sydney, author, former volunteer ethics teacher

  • Martin Mulcare, Non-executive Director, Business Advisor, Volunteer ethics teacher and trainer, member of the Professionalism Committee of the Actuaries Institute

  • Charley, current year 7 high school ethics student and shark enthusiast.

Dr Basarkod's recent work found that: Students who received formal ethics education were better able to recognise ethical issues (also called “moral sensitivity”), gave better reasons about the right thing to do (“moral judgement”) and wanted to prioritise doing the right thing (“moral motivation”). Four in five trials showed meaningful positive effects in these areas.

We found how you teach ethics matters. Programs built around student discussion worked well. Programs built around lectures and readings alone did not... You learn better when you can explain your thinking, safely make mistakes, and get feedback.

Join us to learn more about the latest research, how volunteer ethics teachers are putting this into practice in every lesson, and the impact of ethics education for future generations!

The event will be recorded.
