Global Groove - Cultural Dance Series: Haka
Event description
Welcome to Global Groove — a cultural dance mini-series brought to life by Lakes Multicultural Collective and Mana Tahuna.
From July to November, we’re inviting you to join us on a joyful journey through movement.
Each month, we’ll explore a different style of dance from around the world — taught by passionate local instructors, and designed especially for absolute beginners. These free, community-based classes are all about connection, curiosity, and having a go.
On Sunday 26 July, we begin our dance journey around the globe right here in Aotearoa, with the Haka.
Haka is a powerful ceremonial Māori dance, often performed in a group. It uses fierce movement, foot-stamping, and expressive facial gestures to tell a story, show unity, and express deep emotion. While many associate haka with sport, its roots are far deeper — haka is used to welcome guests, honour ancestors, mark milestones, and strengthen collective spirit.
In this gentle introductory session, facilitators from Mana Tahuna will guide us through the story and meaning of haka, sharing their knowledge and leading us in a beginner-friendly group experience. You don’t need to know anything about haka or te ao Māori to take part — just come with an open mind and a willingness to move!
Whether you're brand new to Queenstown or have lived here for years, this is a rare local opportunity to learn more about Māori culture in a supportive, welcoming space, while strengthening your community network.
