Global Guitar - Classical Music From Around the World
Event description
Hailing from New Zealand, Sydney-based classical guitarist Hamish Goodhue performs an exciting programme showcasing the beauty and intensity of music from around the world. Starting with music from right here in Australia, Hamish takes the audience across the globe, stopping in Brazil, France, New Zealand, and of course Spain! This programme explores not only the international differences in guitar music, but also the idea of classical fusion; combining genres such as jazz, flamenco, blues and raga into the classical repertoire.
Reviewed as ‘Masterly’ Hamish achieved the first prize in the 2024 Taranaki Concerto and Aria Competition after which he performed Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the Taranaki Symphony Orchestra. He later performed and recorded the Adagio from the concerto with the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band which can often be heard on Radio New Zealand. Hamish also achieved the first place prize at the 2018 Muriel May Scholarship Competition, first prize in the youth category of the 2018 New Zealand International Biennial Classical Guitar competition winning a New Zealand made Classical Guitar by Rod Capper, and the SOUNZ prize for the best performance of a New Zealand composition at the 2022 New Zealand International Biennial Classical Guitar competition. The SOUNZ prize included a professional recording of the work which can be found through his YouTube alongside other recordings. In 2024, Hamish was awarded the New Zealand Aspiring Guitarist position for the Taranaki Classical Guitar Summer School where he performed as a featured artist.
In demand as a chamber musician, Hamish has performed in a range of chamber ensembles including duos, trios and quartets, with Orchestra Wellington and with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
As well as an award-winning guitarist, Hamish is well-versed in the world of percussion. Hamish has played for ensembles and orchestras at a community and professional level, such as the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band and Wellington Brass Band. Hamish has represented New Zealand as a percussionist in the National Youth Orchestra, and the National Youth Brass Band where he was principal percussionist from 2019 until 2022.
