This on demand, online training explores what and how of therapeutic goal setting, goal attainment and outcome measures in psychosocial therapy that are different to the ones commonly used by physical therapists. We would explore how to implement these goal measures into everyday therapeutic practice with the clients and into therapeutic reports so that the therapeutic efforts and clients' goal attainments can be measured, analysed, and evaluated.

In the mental health and NDIS practice there is a prerequisite to incorporate the goal measurement outcomes as a part of everyday practice and the importance of having evidence-based measures is frequently emphasised.

The concept of goal setting is not new. Developed in 1960s, the goal-setting theory has evolved from the field of motivational psychology to the area of production and occupational performance, before venturing into the field of rehabilitation and physical therapies. Currently, goal setting constitutes an integral part of clinical practice in NDIS, mental health, and other therapeutic settings. The evidence in the form of outcome measures and goal attainment outcomes, supports the practitioners in the evaluation of their therapeutic efforts and guides their future therapeutic directions.

In the NDIS sector, this evidence is required when completing two NDIS-requested therapy reports at the beginning and the end of each intervention period. It is therefore important to set meaningful and measurable therapy goals that are not only therapy-related and aligned with the NDIS principles of reasonable and necessary but are also corresponding to broader NDIS goals from the participant plans.
This goal-setting procedure along with the outcome measure evidence and relevant report recommendations support the NDIS decision as to whether the recommended supports meet reasonable and necessary criteria and should therefore be funded in the future plan.

In practice, the goal-setting and measurement processes by such professionals as occupational therapists or physiotherapists often focus on physical progress and are informed by quantitative measurements. This may include metric measures to demonstrate an increase in the capacity to mobilise or the use of percentages to illustrate the improvement in various aspects of physical function. The goal measurement process, however, is less straightforward when it comes to professions, such as social work, psychotherapy, counselling or other disciplines, whose therapeutic goals are more qualitative in their nature, and not as easily verified by numbers or percentages.

This training is suitable for social workers, counsellors, psychotherapists, and other allied health and health professionals that would like to develop a comprehensive system for evaluating therapeutic goals that can not be easily measured by numbers.

Training outcome

Upon completion of this training, the participants would be able to

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding about different types of goal measurement instruments in therapeutic mental health and NDIS practice settings.
Confidently implement goal setting and goal measurement procedures into everyday therapy or counselling practice
Easily engage the clients in goal setting and goal measurement procedures.
Support the clients in developing therapeutic goals and goal attainment steps that are more aligned with the lived experience and neurodiversity-affirming approaches.
Incorporate the goal measurement instruments into regular service evaluations and progress reporting.
Regularly use the goal attainment outcomes and other outcome measures in GP letters, mental health reports, and NDIS Therapy Review Reports, to provide the evidence base and to cross-validate your statements and recommendations.

Following the training, all the participants would receive a therapy plan template which can be used at the onset of every therapy or counselling program to define the therapy processes, goals, steps, and ways the goals would be measured. Whilst this document is a standard prerequisite for every therapist in the NDIS sector, its application may be equally useful in mental health areas and as well other therapy settings.
