This winter, the Free Speech Union New Zealand is hitting the road. The Good Faith Yarns Tour brings honest, good-faith conversation to ten communities across the country, including the regional centres that so often get left out of the national conversation. With a general election on the horizon, public debate is getting louder and more polarised. We want to do something different.
Can New Zealand trust its media? The country's newsrooms are shrinking, legacy outlets are haemorrhaging audiences, and trust in journalism is hitting new lows. At the same time, social media has handed a megaphone to everyone, and nobody can agree on who should be responsible for what gets amplified. With an election coming, the question of how New Zealanders get their information, and whether it's any good, has never mattered more.
Joining Ani O'Brien in Hamilton is Duncan Garner, veteran broadcaster, former political editor, and one of New Zealand's most recognisable and unfiltered media voices. Together they'll dig into the Press Gallery, media hypocrisy, public trust, and whether New Zealand journalism has become too cautious, too cosy, or just too scared of its own shadow. This is the conversation the media would rather not have, which is exactly why we're having it.
