ARFL - Good Funding: Philanthropy 101

“The Australian Research Funding Landscape” is a series of online workshops delivered by UTS Aspire with the aim of showcasing the diversity of opportunities available to UTS researchers in attracting external research funding.

The series will begin with an overview session, showcasing the breadth of the research funding landscape in Australia. A number of follow-on sessions are offered in subsequent weeks, each providing detailed insights into the different funding types.

This is the registration page for the follow-on session ‘Good Funding – Philanthropy 101', convened by Sarah Angus (UTS Advancement).

More than ever, researchers are compelled to identify diverse sources of funding to support their work. With Category 1 and 2 funding increasingly competitive, how can talented researchers across all levels of academia find the financial support they need to flourish?

One avenue to consider is philanthropy.

Literally meaning ‘love of mankind’, philanthropy is giving money for a purpose or cause benefiting people you may not personally know. Philanthropy has a rich history of supporting research, both in Australia and internationally.

In this seminar, we’ll explore the Australian philanthropic funding landscape – focusing in on the different types of support available and the best channels to access it.

We’ll look at the tools required to be competitive in the philanthropic funding space, and how these tools can be applied to your work.

We’ll explore:

• relationship building, from identification and qualification of potential philanthropic supporters, through to cultivation and stewardship.
• the qualities of a robust philanthropic partnership.
• the different approaches that can be used to engage non-expert audiences, as well as donor-focused communication and the critical role of story-telling.
• capabilities each researcher can build to support their search for philanthropic funding.

Participants will hear from UTS academics who’ve successfully pitched for philanthropic funding and discover more about how they can consider philanthropic support as part of their overall funding mix. You will also hear from philanthropic funders, who will share what stands out in funding proposals and the importance of good relationships.

We will also go into detail about the expertise available within Faculties and via UTS Advancement to secure philanthropic funding.

Learning outcomes:

• Have a deeper understanding of the kinds of research activities that can be funded by philanthropic supporters
• Be aware of how to find and access philanthropic support for research
• Identify key philanthropic support personnel and structures at UTS
