Granny Bingo: Let's Dab the Beast

On Saturday 5 September, The Industrial is being taken over by two professional bingo-calling grannies for a night of games, prizes and a fair bit of nonsense.

It's all in support of FightMND. For everyone still fighting. And in memory of one very special man. Mate.

• Two hours of Granny Bingo. Two professional grannies who've been doing this for over a decade, and honestly, bingo is the last thing on their minds. Expect sass, expect mischief, expect to laugh until something hurts.

• Prizes all night. Door prize, Spot prizes, Granny Bingo merch up for grabs, and an infamous meat tray for the final game!

• A silent auction stacked with goodies.

• Limited edition 'Play On' candles available for purchase.

• Music to see the night out.

• A room full of people who all turned up for the same reason.

• Your bingo book and texta for the night

• Granny's cut sandwiches and bingo nibbles on the table

Where the money goes

All profits from the night go to FightMND, funding research into Motor Neurone Disease and supporting everyone still fighting it, along with the families fighting alongside them.

Who was Mate?

Geoff Smalley, known to his grandchildren and family as Mate, spent his life teaching people. He taught at high schools across the region for more than twenty years, including Sunbury College. He owned and operated the Gisborne South Swimming Centre for thirty-two years, teaching over 10,000 students to swim, and he was Head Coach of the South Gisborne Sharks Swimming Club for more than twenty years, guiding swimmers all the way to elite competition. He barracked, proudly and loyally, for the Western Bulldogs.

Not long after Geoff retired, he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in October 2020. He fought this disease with strength and dignity before passing away on 15 February 2022.

When the Beast stole his voice, a touch of thumbs became our way. It was our hello, our thank you, our goodbye, and our I love you. And the thumbs up, of course, meant GO DOGS.

We are now committed to continuing his fight, so that no other families have to see and endure what this disease does. We formed Mate's Crew to take part in Daniher's Drive to raise funds for FightMND, because there is still no treatment or cure for this disease. In 2025 we raised $16,000. In 2026 we're going for $20,000 and you can help us get there!.
