Great Expectations: Top Secret Life Drawing
Event description
"If this isnt love, I dont think I can handle the real thing"
In 1998, Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations was reimagined as a modern American tale starring Ethan Hawke,
Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert De Niro and Anne Bancroft.
The film stands out on two accounts. The colour green. Spanish Director
Alfonso Cuarón chose green because it represents hope (or expectations). The other notable feature of the
film is the art of Francesco Clemente. Clemente's works are characterized by their formal
experimentation with symbols, portraiture, and the human figure. Relocating to New York in 1981, Clemente
began collaborating with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Allen Ginsberg. Although categorised as a neo
expressionist, Clemente has shunned such restrictive categories.
For this session, artists are encouraged to consider how they might incorporate Clemente's style into their work
