Great Global Mend at Yagan Square
Description
Got something with a hole in it? A missing button? A hem that gave up on you three winters ago? Bring it to Yagan Square , we're throwing a party for it.
On Saturday 7 November, something magical happens , all across Australia at the exact same moment, thousands of people put down whatever they're doing and pick up a needle instead. Councils, community groups, total strangers who've never sewn a stitch in their life , all mending, together, with purpose. That's the whole spirit of the Great Global Mend: reuse it, repair it, keep it in use and we reckon everyone deserves an opportunity to learn. We're doing our bit of it right here in Yagan Square, with support from the WA Government.
Here's the plan for the day:
10am to 12pm - the long table. Grab a seat, any seat. We've got a run of repair workshops lined up (details to come, a bit of mystery never hurt anyone). You can expect real skills and great company, including the brilliant Sophie from FabPatch . Kids, grandparents, first-timers, sewing nerds , everyone's welcome, no experience required.
11am - the big moment. Every council, shire and community group taking part , including everyone standing right here , gets counted in at exactly the same time, and the number climbs live on the big screen. You'll be part of a total that spans the whole country. Come be a number that matters.
10am to 3pm - everything else, all day long.
Free workshops for the whole family!
At the Mending Machine, you're the one bringing it back to life ,pedal it yourself, with a sewing facilitator right there cheering you on, because that's the GGM way: get your hands on it, learn something, walk away with a skill you didn’t have when you arrived.
If today's not the day you want to learn (fair enough, some repairs are just fiddly), wheel it over to the pink RE:Fashion horse float instead , yes, a genuine horse float, painted pink, now Circular Fashion Festival’s repair pop up, where their sewing facilitator will take care of the trickier jobs for you.
Right next door, swap something you're over for something you'll love, at our clothes swap.
Then wander the Circular Markets presented by Lucky Finds Market with an amazing selection of upcycled fashion finds and pre-loved treasures plus a few more surprises we'll be sprinkling through the day.
