Step behind the scenes and discover one of the most important instruments in the history of American astronomy. Built in 1847, the Great Refractor Telescope was the largest telescope in the United States for over twenty years and played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of the universe.

Today, this remarkable instrument stands as a centerpiece of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, one of the world's leading institutions for astronomical research and discovery, where generations of scientists have continued to expand humanity's understanding of the cosmos.

This guided tour explores not only the remarkable history and engineering of the Great Refractor itself, but also the extraordinary legacy of the women of the Harvard College Observatory. Working in an era when opportunities for women in science were limited, these pioneering astronomers transformed our understanding of the cosmos through their meticulous observations and groundbreaking discoveries.

Join us for a journey through nearly two centuries of astronomical history and discover how one historic telescope, the world-class institution that preserves it, and the remarkable people who worked alongside it helped change science forever.
