On Friday 8th of March GSN in association with Yulli's Brews presents FIG, Leroy Macqueen (Duo) and the wonderful Chiara Kovac.
Fig -
Fig is Tim Burnett, Tim Jennings, Simon Jackman, Jack Chapman, Ben Baltins, and Paddy Morgan. The band originally began as a solo writing project of Burnett, until momentum pulled the group together to record a collection of synth-centered slow-glam ballads.. With the new album, the band have delved deeper into 80s pop and rock, with an album that recalls the beautiful dream-pop heights of Beach House, the quirky electronica of Mark Mothersbaugh, and the pulsing drive of Springsteen’s ‘Born in the USA’. Armed with the new full length LP, and a lineup shuffle with new member Mike Baltins, the band is in an exciting place to take the local scene by storm.
Leroy Macqueen - With their powerful voice, introspective lyrics and emotional songs, Leroy Macqueen is quickly making a name for themselves. Their live performances are a thrilling mix of undeniable charisma, infectious energy, and off-the-cuff humour that leaves audiences wanting more. Born with a musical passion, Leroy learned guitar and songwriting in their early teenage years. They rose to fame as part of the punk band Gooch Palms, gaining a devoted global following with their energetic and rowdy shows. However, after a decade of success, Leroy decided to embark on a new musical journey. During the Melbourne lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, they rediscovered their love for classic Americana folk music and embraced the genre's timeless charm. Now, Leroy has reinvented themselves as a brooding balladeer, combining their melodramatic baritone with the spirit of punk rock. Their country sound, reminiscent of iconic bands like The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, is infused with a dynamic and electrifying energy that sets them apart from the rest. Leroy's songwriting is deeply personal and honest, exploring themes of self-acceptance, dreams, and the realities of a life on the road. Drawing inspiration from their years of touring the world and living in America, they craft songs that delve into the highs and lows of nomadic living. From tales of heavy drinking to the mental challenges of the music industry, Leroy's lyrics beautifully capture the essence of the travelling troubadour
lifestyle.
Chiara Kovac - Chiara Kovac (she/her) is a 23 year old folk-punk songwriter from the South Coast of NSW. Caught between an obsession with detailed story-telling lyrics and heavy guitars, Chiara finds her music powered less by genre and more by raw emotion. Sharing sonic and artistic kinship with Courtney Barnett, Julia Jacklin and Camp Cope, Chiara and her band have alchemised a thrilling catalogue of music both live and in the studio, coming to your playlist soon. NEW SINGLE ‘WEEKEND’ OUT DECEMBER 1ST ‘Weekend’ is the latest single from emerging artist Chiara Kovac. The lyrics contrast moody vignettes and direct statements to trace the tension and frustration before the first move in a romance. With a rippling drum-machine and heady lo-fi synths, the song is a modern soundtrack to a classic heartache. “I wrote this song in 2019 and I can honestly say it’s been one of my favourites ever since. I love putting humour into my songs, it just makes them seem more true. This song has also been a staple of our live set and the duality of the two versions is part of why I love writing and performing. In the recording we captured such an internal universe, the sleepiness, the mystery and live we get to play up the frustration and comedy. I love that people get to experience both.” Recently making their mark as the winners of USYD Battle of the Bands with their signature folk punk sound and high-quality songs. This has cemented them as ‘one to watch’ in the Australian music scene.
