How can we as a community - and as a magazine - stand against the rise of the far right?

At Greater Govanhill, like many others, we have been deeply saddened by recent events in Glasgow city centre.

The normalisation of far-right rhetoric, the harmful framing of stories in parts of the mainstream media, and the growing influence of divisive political narratives have created a climate in which prejudice and hostility can flourish. This stands in direct opposition to the values we hold.

No one should feel unsafe in our city because of their race, culture, faith, nationality, or identity.

For the past six years, Greater Govanhill has created space for people to tell their own stories and share their experiences. Through our journalism, events and community projects, we have sought to amplify voices that are often underrepresented – like those of New Scots – to foster understanding, break down barriers, and bring people together.

We have celebrated the richness and diversity of our neighbourhood and explored what it means to live alongside one another in one of Scotland's most diverse communities.

But at a moment like this, we need to ask ourselves: what more can we do? How do we challenge division and fear? How do we ensure that Govanhill remains a place where people look out for one another and where everyone feels they belong? What is the role of our work as a community magazine?

Join us for an open community conversation as we explore these questions together and discuss how we can respond collectively to the challenges facing our city.
